Abstract
In terms of environmental management and sustainable development, the basin of the Aral Sea is an important case study with significant implications. Extensive ecological degradation and socio-economic issues have been brought about throughout the region as a consequence of decades of water consumption that is not sustainable. The research that is currently available on environmental governance, water management regulations, and sustainability efforts that are associated with the Aral Sea is analysed and discussed in this study. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of national and international initiatives to combat environmental degradation while maintaining a balance between economic requirements and agricultural goals. Key topics that are explored include the management of water across international borders, regional collaboration, the restoration of ecosystems, and the utilisation of resources in a sustainable manner. Based on the findings, it appears that in order to successfully restore the Aral Sea region, it is necessary to have unified policy frameworks, the participation of stakeholders, and long-term environmental planning undertaken. In conclusion, the article makes some suggestions for strategic paths that could be taken for sustainable development in the basin.
